In 2009, Stern was named during Downbeat’s 75th Anniversary as one of the best 75 guitarists ever. The Jazz Blast is a day-long festival for high school jazz ensembles and the winning group will kick off the evening concert followed by the Northwestern College Jazz Ensemble. The JazzMN Orchestra with Mike Stern will perform after intermission.

Doc Severinsen & His Big Band are back on tour for the first time in many seasons. The Grammy-winning trumpeter and former "Tonight Show" bandleader has assembled some of the finest musicians from around the country. Their repertoire includes Ellington and Basie standards, pop, jazz, ballads, big band classics and, of course, "The Tonight Show" theme. The Four Voices String Quartet and saxophonist David Milne with the UWRF Faculty Jazz Quartet featuring drummer Craig Hara, bassist Eric Graham, and pianist Mary Louise Knutson, will perform the US premiere of "Terra Madre" (Mother Earth), a new chamber jazz/classical/world music work by Fred Sturm. "Terra Madre" is a musical plea for world unity that celebrates both the diversity and shared influences of indigenous music from nine different countries. Ethnic music, folk songs, and ancient works dating back as far as the 13th century are joined together in this contemporary chamber music setting.
