Join Walker/West’s Women in Jazz Initiative for interactive jazz workshops led by local women jazz musicians, along with opportunities to play together in jam sessions. Pianist-composer Mary Louise Knutson leads this Blues Workshop. In this workshop for both instrumentalists and vocalists, Mary Louise will share a brief history of the blues, the lyric and harmonic structure, the scales for improvisation on both major and minor blues, a list of various styles and significant artists, and more. Students will get to hear the clinicians - pianist Mary Louise Knutson, bassist Liz Draper, drummer Jendeen Forberg, guitarist Jenny Case, saxophonist Stephanie Weisler, and vocalist Ginger Commodore - perform a variety of blues tunes and will learn their role in playing or singing blues with a band. Bring your instrument or voice if you want to participate in learning the scales or the jam session in the second half. Or just come to listen and learn more about the blues. No prior jazz experience required. Free to participate. Women, non-binary, and trans instrumentalists and vocalists are welcome to participate, all are welcome to attend.
